BUKWO district Woman MP, Everlyn Tete Chelangat, has asked the Police to arrest parents who keep children out of school to do domestic chores.
Chelangat also asked the Police to arrest and prosecute local council leaders who do not take action against parents who denied children the opportunity to study.
She attributed the poor Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) performance in the district to lack of concern by parents about the education of their children and failure by local council leaders to force parents take children to school.
“The government cannot implement free education single handedly. The success of the programme greatly depends on the contribution of everybody,†Chelengat said.
She was recently addressing residents at Bukwo town council hall during a district stakeholders meeting to review last year’s PLE performance.
Bukwo was ranked the 79th out of 80 districts throughout the country. Paul Chelimo, the district chairman, attributed the poor results to lack of commitment by both teachers and parents. He said the parents had ignored to provide food for their children in school.
