KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has appealed to families of those who were buried at the Jinja Road cemetery to join forces and oppose the development of the cemetery into a shopping mall.
This comes after Korean investors alleged that KCC had leased the cemetery to them to build a shopping mall and petrol stations.
Earlier in the month, KCC officials stopped the investor from fencing off the cemetery opposite the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The mayor, Nasser Sebeggala, told journalists at the City Hall recently that his predecessor, John Ssebaana Kizito had been approached by the investors with a proposal to develop the cemetery but the proposal was rejected.
“We were also approached but we never accepted it,†Sebaggala said. “It is only the council which can authorise the leasing of its land,†Ssebaggala said.
An officer in the US Air Force, Dr. Ivan Edwards, last week vowed to block the takeover of the cemetery because some of his ancestors are buried there.
