MOROTO - The UPDF has reduced the number of protected kraals to safeguard the Karimojong animals. “We have decided to merge five kraals into two to enable us protect their animals from attacks by the unpredictable raiders,” the 403 Brigade operations and training officer, Maj. Ismail Masudi, said at his command post on Monday. He said over 20,000 head of cattle and other animals would be secured this way.

Jinja makes losses on park

JINJA - The municipal council has lost over sh20m in non-remittance of revenue from Fadita, a company contracted to run the taxi park. In an interview, the town clerk, David Bashakara, said the money had accumulated over two months. Fadita won a tender to run the park in June last year after bidding a higher price of sh79m above the sh76m reserve price. A source in Fadita said the company was collecting less money than was expected. Fadita contiunes to manage the taxi park.

Tororo builds 11 bridges

TORORO - A total of $27,000 has been contributed by a US charity to open up a two-kilometre road. The money from the Pilot-Light Foundation based in California was also used to construct 11 bridges over swampy sections that were impassable during the rainy season. The president of the foundation, Carol Levy, said the road that connects Mulanda and Lwala parishes in Mulanda sub-county was the latest project by the foundation.

Man jailed over matooke theft

JINJA - Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to six months in prison for theft. The Grade Two magistrate, Okitwi Oditi, convicted Sadara Baleta for stealing a bunch of matooke from Ramathan Odongo, a resident of Kaitabawala in Mafubira sub-county. Baleta confessed that he stole the matooke on 10 April from Odongo’s house.
