THE Kampala Hilton Hotel will be completed by April next year, the Aya Group chairman has said. Mohammed Hamid said the first phase of construction, which involved raising 20 floors, had been completed.

The hotel is now at the finishing phase, which is expected to last the next eight or 10 months. “We have already ordered for the finishing materials from Italy, Spain, Denmark and Dubai. We have the ability to complete the hotel,” Hamid stressed.

In 2006, the Government granted Aya Group a 15-acre piece of land in Nakasero, where the offices of the former Uganda Television (UTV), now the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, were located.

The group was supposed to build a five-star hotel to accommodate guests during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in November 2007. However, it didn’t beat the deadline

Upon completion, the hotel will be worth $100m (sh220b). “We have secured enough funding to take the project until its completion,” Hamid told reporters at Nakasero.

So far, close to $40m (sh88b) has been spent on construction and procuring materials.

He said President Yoweri Museveni was happy with the progress.

“People should appreciate that it is not easy to undertake a $100m project. But we have struggled and shall soon employ more than 2,000 Ugandans.”
