THE POLICE have closed down three private security companies that failed to meet the required standards.

Axis Security Systems with headquarters in Namuwongo, Kampala, Security Eagle Eye Nature with head offices in Luzira and Swila were deregistered last month.

The Police stormed the offices of Axis security systems in Kibibi Galagi, Mityana and closed the branch after quizzing the top company officials and seizing firearms on Saturday.

Commanded by the district Police commander, Moses Otala, the Police officers recorded statements from the supervisors before taking the guns and other property to the Police station.
The commissioner in charge of private security organisations and firearms, Ahmed Wafuba, said Axis Security had run into financial problems.

“They had some financial constraints which meant that they would not be able to pay their personnel in time, recruit and properly train their personnel, thus putting out guards who were not motivated,” Wafuba said.

The closure of Axis, he said, followed several warnings to the company.

“We have had a series of meetings with the managers after carrying out both formal and informal inspections and asked them to rectify areas of concern but to no avail,” he said.

The other two companies, he said, were closed down over similar reasons.

The branch supervisor of Axis Security in Mityana town, Lawrence Okuru, said he was surprised about the Police’s action.
“It has come as a surprise. There is no reason that I think could have led to this,” Okuru told The New Vision.
