KABALE is to get a 30MW-35MW thermal plant worth $65m (sh115b).
The plant, which will be built by Madhvani International South Africa, a subsidiary of Kabale Energy, will be peat-fired.

Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation in wetlands.
A study on renewable energy development and efficiency revealed that peat resources in Uganda could generate about 800MW.

Nilesh Kanabar, the Kabale Energy company secretary, said the project, which would be implemented at Kiruruma swamp, would provide reliable power.
He said transmission losses would also be reduced.

“Power generated will be connected to the national grid and sold to the transmission company,” Kanabar said.

The firm has applied to the Electricity Regulatory Authority for a licence to generate and sell power.

A Finland firm POYRY OR is the project consultant, while GreenMax, another international firm, will provide the financial services.

Once completed, rural areas in western Uganda will access more electricity. This will reduce the demand for hydro-electricity in the country, which is 120MW less.

Kanabar said Kabale local authorities had identified 300 hectares of land for industrial use and would assist the firm purchase 50-75 hectares which they want.
