LITTLE known Caxton Kalule captured top position in the Chess Olympiad qualifiers as a host of former Olympians were upstaged at the weekend.

Kalule, who leads the qualifiers with four points, triumphed over national champion Moses Kawuma, Shadrack Kantinti, Joel Wegoye and veteran John Kikonyogo.

The other surprise was delivered by junior player Wegoye, who upset former Olympians Harold Wanyama, Kenneth Kakooza and Stephen Kisuze.

Raphael Buti also beat former Olympians Hassan Mulambe and Bob Bibasa (right) before drawing with Moses Kawuma and Michael Mawanda to gather three points.
Grace Nsubuga, with three points, was the only former Olympian who survived the upset bug.

Former Olympian Isaac Munanira lost to veteran Joachim Okoth while Kikonyogo, who led the first round phase of the qualifiers, trails the pack with one point out of a possible four.

Bibasa, who was only allowed to take part in this phase after submitting an apology to Uganda Chess Federation for indiscipline in the first phase, has two points.

After this phase, the top 12 will qualify for the third and last phase, in which the top five will be determined to represent Uganda in the 2008 Olympiad scheduled for July in Dresden, Germany.
