Archbishop George Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury is in Uganda to officiate at the 10th anniversary celebrations for Uganda Christian University. And while rallying the $30m needed to build the university’s new library, he will also host a dinner.

Archbishop George Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury is in Uganda to officiate at the 10th anniversary celebrations for Uganda Christian University. And while rallying the $30m needed to build the university’s new library, he will also host a dinner.
Anyone who wants to attend the fundraising dinner, to take place on Sunday at Serena Hotel in Kampala, will have to part with sh100,000 to get an invite.
Corporate companies wishing to bring in several employees can each pay sh1.4m for a table.
Lord Carey, who was the Archbishop of the Church of Canterbury until 2002, is well-known for his firm stand against homosexuality in the Anglican Church. He is a founder member of many universities, including Uganda Christian University Mukono.
Among other activities, the Archbishop will, on October 5, dedicate the new university entrance and the building set up by the university in partnership with the International Christian Medical Centre.
Archbishop Carey has successfully steered many colleges and universities to posterity. Not only is he the Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire in the UK, he is also President of the London College of Theology, Fellow of the Kings College London, Fellow of the Christ’s University College and Fellow of the Library of Congress. Lord Carey is also a recepient of 12 Honorary Doctorate degrees and has written 14 books.
He was born in 1935 in East London to a hospital porter. He left school at 15 and began working at the London Electricity Board as an office boy. He also served with the Royal Air Force in Iraq in the 1950s.
In 1991 Carey became the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury and served 70 million Anglicans around the world until his retirement in 2002.
In retirement, he is on the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum and Co-chair of the Council of 100, which is seeking to bridge the gulf between the West and Islamic worlds.
Carey married Eileen Harmsworth Hood in 1960, and they have four children and thirteen grandchildren.
