WESTERN built on their day one lead to retain the Inter-Regions Golf tournament in Kampala last night. Western had in their ranks youthful stars Grace Ocici, Opio Onito, Aloysius Kimera and Flavia Namakula, who spurred the region to their 10th victory in the competition.

Kimera (76), Ocici (70) Opio (64) and Namakula (67) contributed generously to their team score.

Western team captain Gad Musasizi attributed their victory at the Uganda Golf Club Kitante, to determination and luck.

“Everyone played well. We went for the youth because that’s where true strength lies. The future of golf is in the youth and that’s the way to go,” Musasizi remarked.

Northern, that went into the final round three stableford points behind Western, had a disastrous closing round.

Northern’s Shaban Lwanga retired due to a stomach upset, while Phillip Kasozi was disqualified for not handing in his score-card for verification. Kasozi’s disqualification cost his side 60 points.

“We did our best but we were unlucky. However, second position is not bad,” Northern captain John Waigo said.

Eastern’s winless streak continued as they settled for third position.

Buganda captain Emma Wamala
put on a brave face after the dismal performance. “Western got it right to field young players. They deserved to win and we have to learn from them,” Wamala said.
