The Government will give district chairpersons loans to acquire new vehicles, the treasurer of Uganda Local Governments Association has said.

Vincent Semakula, the Rakai LC5 chairman, said: “The Cabinet has approved this and it is only awaiting discussion by Parliament.
“We shall buy Pajeros like the MPs do,” Semakula said, while handing over 22 motorcycles to sub-county chiefs at the Rakai district headquarters on Tuesday.

The motorcycles will help the chiefs sensitise people about the Prosperity-For-All programme. Semakula did not disclose the amount of money the chairpersons will receive.

He assured the chiefs that the Government would pay sh25b as Graduated Tax compensation after realising that the newly-introduced taxes failed to take off.

He requested the Government to allow districts to recruit up to 65% of the required staff to enable their activities run efficiently.

“Some districts have only 9% of the workers they need yet there is a lot of work to be done, especially at the sub-county level. We lack parish chiefs and extension workers.”

He urged the chiefs to motivate people to engage in income-generating activities. “Coffee growing has picked up in most parts of Rakai district. I suggest that you advise the people in your areas to emphasise coffee growing.”
