AT LEAST 75% of works on the sh600m sports complex under construction at the Uganda Christian University, Mukono, have been completed.

Johann Nietsch, the project manager, said Honest Contractors, John Sewamala Ltd and Vishwa, an Indian firm, were hired to build the modern facilities.
The complex will host the 2007 inter-university games that kick-off on December 16.

“All works will end on December 12,” Nietsch said. “We are ahead of schedule.”

Four basketball courts, five volleyball turfs and three tennis courts are nearing completion at the university.

“We will have a clay tennis court,” he said. Eight tracks for 400 metres athletics would be built, Nietsch said.

The basketball court will cover 14, 000 sqaure metres, while the football and running track will cover 20, 000 square metres.

Nietsch said high quality basketball backboards and tennis nest were imported from the US.

He said seats at the football field would accommodate 3,000 people, adding that the rains that poured during October and November, threatened the progress.
Vincent Mugaba, the spokesperson, said hosting the inter-university games would enable the varsity attract more students. The university boasts of a population of over 5,000 students.

“Sports has always been a priority here. We are honoured to be hosting the inter-university games,” Mugaba said.
