ARUA Hospital has signed a sh3.2b contract with Excel Construction Company to complete the first-ever storey medical ward, reports Frank Mugabi.
The medical superintendent, Dr. Philip Anyama, said part of the money would be used to construct a faecal waste lagoon to improve the sanitation.
The development ends a row between the district authorities and the health ministry over the renovation of an abandoned ward that previously stood at the construction site.
The ministry initially wanted to refurbish the ward, but the local authorities opposed the plan, arguing that the structure had been condemned by engineers and that there was need for storey buildings due to lack of land.
They also argued that the hospital was over-congested since it received patients from all the seven districts in West Nile and from Sudan and the DR Congo.
After protracted negotiations, the ministry accepted to break down the old ward and replace it with a three-storey building.
