MARTIN Toroitich booked himself a place on the national mountain running team, after enjoying a one-man show at the inaugural national championships held in Bukwo yesterday. The world mountain running championship will be held in Torino, Italy September 6.
Toroitich, who was eager to improve his endurance, broke from the field around the half way mark, and never looked back, sprinting to victory in 44 minutes 32.1 seconds.
Standard Club’s Moses Cherop came home in second position 21 seconds after the winner.
Toroitich used the meet as warm up for the world athletics championships due in Berlin, Germany August 14-24 but his world championship team mate Geoffrey Kusuro opted out preferring to work on his speed elsewhere.
The Uganda athletics federation officials pushed the Bukwo event from Sunday to yesterday on request by the local community. The community wanted Sunday reserved for church service and rest.
UPDF runner Irene Chemusto took advantage of the absence of Africa mountain running silver medalist Adero Nyakisi to win the women 8km competition, that received a low turn up.
