THE uganda telecom Kobs could have had the last laugh after a troublesome year but it was not meant to be. Simon Wakabi, who had earlier turned in a brilliant performance, missed a conversion after his side had levelled the score in the dying moments.

A 16-16 draw was enough for MTN Heathens to claim the 2009 Bell Super 8 Rugby League title at Kampala on Saturday and the party officially began at the MTN tent as they dined and wined to the end of Kobs’ dominance of the league for the last three seasons.

The classic between Kobs and Heathens lived up to its billing as the capacity crowd cheered every tackle with the score close throughout, hence no surprise that it ended in a draw.

Without banned coach Fred Mudoola and players Victor Wadia and Vincent Ogwete, Kobs were expected to struggle this season but put up a praiseworthy fight all the way to the dying moments of the last game of the league.

Kobs were certainly left regretting the three points they lost in the boardroom for continuing for fielding under Mudoola.

Credit goes to Entebbe Mongers for pulling off results that kept the title too close to call up to the last day. Mongers held Kobs and denied Heathens and Pirates bonus points in the first round.

Despite possessing a respectable squad led by national captain John Musoke, Rhino hardly posed a threat to the top three Heathens, Kobs and Pirates.

Instead Mongers, guided by Kenyan tactician Ham Onsandu, emerged as a new force to reckon with.
Kobs that normally recovers quickly from setbacks now look to the Uganda Cup, that kicks off next month, for silverware this season.
