REPAIR works on the Kampala-Jinja highway have been completed, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has said, writes Joel Ogwang.
The sh7b works, undertaken by Multiplex-Omega joint venture, involved filling of potholes, digging drainages, installing zebra- crossings and signposts.
The repairs that kicked-off in 2007 were to last 12 months. However, concerns were raised about the final layer of tarmac at Namagunga, Bulyantete, Namanve and Seeta.
Dan Alinange, the roads authority spokesperson, said the contractors had effected the changes.
“Rectification of the spots has been completed.†The Government had also allocated over sh10b towards the rehabilitation of the 23km-stretch Nakawa-Mukono and the Kampala-Kawempe road, he said.
The European Union and the Government funded the works under the second package of the backlog roads maintenance programme.
Resealing of the Nakawa- Mukono highway undertaken by Dott Services is about to be completed, while the tender for the Mukono-Jinja road had been advertised, Alinange said.
“This is in preparation for dual-carriage way to ease traffic on the Kampala-Jinja highway,†he said.
