UGANDA’S insurance industry accumulated a gross premium worth sh167b written by licensed insurance companies by 2008, according to the annual report issued by the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) last week.
Of the total premiums, non-life insurance accounted for 91% and life premiums stood at 9%, a state that requires public sensitisation about the relevance of insurance policies that are not mandatory.
The non-life policies, incorporate the Motor Third Party, a statutory insurance policy which accounted for 90% of the industry’s total revenue.
The sector, however, recorded a reduction in the assets amounting to sh1.9b in 2008.
150 guards get jobs
OVER 150 guard jobs were secured for Ugandans in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by a local recruiting agency.
According to the managing director of Two Niles Agency, a recruiting-for-export firm, Abdulrazak Hussein, the jobs are in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE and were on a three-year contract. Hussein said the firm had signed a contract with Securiguard Middle East in Abu Dhabi to initially supply them with 56 guards. “We have selected 56 candidates and are now processing their visas.â€
Beer firm to boost farmers
NILE Breweries has encouraged epuripur (sorghum) farmers form groups so that they can be helped to get loans from banks. “We are willing to become a guarantor to organised groups of farmers who want to access loans to purchase tractors and bird guns to improve the quality and quantity.
