THE Uganda Revenue Authority has scooped the clean business competition award of 2009 in a campaign organised by Rotary Club Kampala West.

Others that got awards were the commercial court, Coach Africa (a training consultancy), Carr Stanyer Sims (an audit firm) and Sausage King (dealers in meat products).

During the ceremony, the rotary president, Mariam Wipfler, said the competition was aimed at recognising businesses that uphold ethics.

“We have read in the press stories of businesses that are corrupt and unethical, but we want to recognise and promote those that are ethical” Wipfler said.

She said the award would be given annually. The ceremony held at Shangai Restaurant in Kampala on Wednesday, was chaired by former auditor general James Kahooza.

Kahooza urged organisations to practice high professionalism in order to grow. He advised proprietors to stop involving politicians in their work.

“I know that business is competitive, so some proprietors think of dodging taxes by involving politicians but it is better to be ethical in order to grow and succeed.”

The Rotary club vocational services director, Noah Bwaya, said over 350 organisations were reached to participate in the competition but only ten participated.

He revealed that future competitions will also attract NGOs, para- government, multi nationals; large private and small and medium enterprises.

The URA assistant commissioner for modernization, Kalyebbi Magoola, said in the last five years they have undergone management changes that have helped them to achieve more and collect more taxes.

He said they had built partnerships and closed gaps that were being manipulated by corrupt officials with their Integrity enhancement project and other mechanisms.
