EDITOR—I appeal to the Government, stakeholders and residents, of Jinja to revive the industries and development of the town. Until recently, Jinja was the uncontested industrial hub of Uganda ahead of Kampala.

EDITOR—I appeal to the Government, stakeholders and residents, of Jinja to revive the industries and development of the town. Until recently, Jinja was the uncontested industrial hub of Uganda ahead of Kampala. From the 1960s to the late 1980s, it was brimming with factories of all kinds.

Jinja’s industrial glory came to a halt because of diverse misfortunes like the expulsion of Asians, the collapse of the agricultural economy and the shifting of the Basoga elite to Kampala. The business at the Rippon pier was also shifted to Port Bell.

The expansion of Kampala and the increase of its population made investors prefer Kampala to Jinja and hence leaving Jinja a ghost town! The Government needs to support the industries in the regions that lag behind and encourage investors who want to do business to such regions. Jinja’s industrial glory can be revived.
