UK-A man, who gave a three-year-old girl a cigarette to smoke while another child filmed it, was jailed for 18 months. Graeme Conroy, 31, handed the lit cigarette to the little girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and encouraged her to inhale it. He could be heard laughing as the girl puffed away. Conroy admitted an offense of wilfully ill-treating, neglecting or exposing a child in a manner likely to cause suffering or injury to health.

TAIWAN - A 17-year-old boy cut off his father's hands to get back at him for iron rule at home, including periods of physical abuse. Police say the father, surnamed Fan, was sleeping when the boy crept into his bedroom and hacked off both hands with a watermelon knife. "The boy was dissatisfied with control at home," the police official said. "He apparently has not shown any remorse for what he did." He was arrested and the father is hospitalised.

ITALY - A Sicilian builder transferred from prison to house arrest pleaded to be locked up again to escape arguments with his wife at home. Santo Gambino, 30, did time for dumping hazardous waste before being moved to house arrest in his home. After a few days, Gambino went to the police station and asked to be put away again to avoid arguing with his wife, who accused him of failing to pay for the upkeep of their two children. Police charged him with violating the conditions of his sentence and made him go home and patch things up with his wife.
