COMMONWEALTH Games gold medalist Dorcus Inzikuru was yesterday robbed of sh13.9m. The money, intended for her three-month training in Kenya, was mysteriously stolen at 1:00pm shortly after she withdrew it from Kenya Commercial Bank, Nakumatt branch on Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala.
Inzikuru suspects a tall light-skinned man who, after commending her for the good job she is doing for Uganda at a nearby boda boda stage, later followed her to the bank.
“I saw him at the entrance. He approached me as I walked out and tapped my hand that was holding the bag where the money was,†recounted the athlete.
She added that she realised she had lost the money when it came to paying for a boda boda on her way to Eco Bank where she wanted to make a deposit.
“The envelope where the money had been placed in the bank was still in the bag but all it had was a small stick,†the baffled Inzikuru explained. She reported the case to Jinja Road Police.
Inzikuru said the boda boda rider claimed to know the tall man. “He said the suspect had gone to Crane Bank in Kireka. We rode to Kireka but there was no sign of the tall man.â€
The boda boda man also fled after learning that Inzikuru planned to report the latest twist to the Police.
“I am stuck. I don’t know what to do. I borrowed this money,†said Inzikuru, who is training for next year’s Commonwealth Games in India.
The 2005 steeplechase world champion trains together with other elite runners at a high altitude camp in Eldoret.
“It’s very upsetting to lose that kind of money at this time of the year. It’s very risky these days to move with big sums of money,†said Uganda Athletics Federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.
