WOODEN floors are warm (unlike ceramic tiles) and homely. If well maintained they are also very durable. It costs quite a bit to fit wooden tiles, so proper maintenance is a must.

“How much care a wood floor will need depends on the traffic it has to endure. For an average home, the floor should be polished at least once in six months,” says Cathy Nantongo, a home maker.

Find out from where you buy the tiles, what type of finish was used on them. The polish you will need will depend on the finish. “We sell hard wood floor tiles, so you can use the ordinary wood polish available in supermarkets,” says Seema Punjani of the furniture division of Hwang Sung. For about sh5,500, you will pick a can of hard wood polish from the home care section of any good supermarket.

To protect your wood floor from scratches by fitting protector pads on all the furniture legs, placing mats and rugs in areas of heavy traffic such as corridors and door ways. Mats and rugs must be kept dry at all times and dust should be swept from underneath them regularly. High heels and sports shoes can also scratch the wooden floor.

To keep the finish from going dull, regularly sweep your floor with a soft brush and mop it with a dump but well wrung out clean cloth. Never wet-mop a wood floor as the standing water will damage and discolour the wood.

It is best not to fit a wood floor in the kitchen and bathroom, where water is likely to spill often, but if you have a wood floor in the kitchen, put a rug in front of the sink to catch the spilling water. Remember, it is not so much the half yearly polishing that keeps your floor sparkling but the small regular care routines.
