THE appointments committee will today vet the judges who were nominated by the President.

“We are meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) to deal with the matter,” the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, said yesterday.

Ssekandi, who also chairs the committee, dismissed claims that he had returned the original list of the nominees to the President.

President Museveni nominated 16 judges to fill different posts in the Judiciary.

Justice Galdino Okello was sent to the Supreme Court, while Augustine Nshimye was for the Court of Appeal.

Those appointed to the High Court were Joseph Murangira, Anup Singh Choudry, Lawrence Gidudu, Wilson Kwesiga, Elizabeth Musoke, Simon Byabakama, Owiny Dollo, Irene Mulyagonja, Benjamin Kabiito, Zam Zam Nagujja, Elizabeth Ibanda, Jane Kiggundu, Ralph Ochan and Alexandra Nkonge.

There have been a public out cry on the case backlog in the courts.
As of July 2007, there were 4,839 cases pending in the High Court and 23,417 others pending in the Chief Magistrates Courts.

The Supreme Court is short by two judges following the death of Justice Arthur Oder and the retirement of Justice Alfred Karokora.

The High Court has a shortage of 17 judges excluding those serving in international jurisdictions, the Amnesty Commission and the Inspectorate of Government.

The Court of Appeal is the only court that has all it’s allotted judges.
