MOSES Kibet had a one-man sprint finish to take the 5000m national junior championships title at Kyambogo University ground on Saturday.

The venue was shifted from the International School of Uganda, in Lubowa to Kyambogo, after the technical committee ruled that the wet and slippery mud-track could not hold a competition of that magnitude.

Kibet, a novice from Standard Athletics Club, clocked 14 minutes and 14 seconds to beat barefooted Dickson Huru of Kapchorwa in the men's race.

The two had broken off the chasing park with four laps to go. But with two laps remaining, Kibet sprang into a sprint and never looked back until the finishing tape.
The day belonged to Kapchorwa athletes as Josephat Kibet took the 1500m honours with ease.

However, only four track events and three field events could go ahead as the ground was also hosting the national mini cricket festival.

Organising secretary Faustin Kiwa said that though no other junior event will be held, the federation will encourage the athletes to compete in other open events in a bid to qualify for international meets.

The juniors are bidding to qualify for the World Junior Championships (July 8-13) in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and also for the Africa Senior Championships later this month in Addis Ababa, and the Beijing Olympics in August.
