TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Faith Byanjeru was recently named Miss Friendship of the World. Byanjeru beat 113 other contestants from all over the world in the Miss Tourism Queen International Pageant in Zheng Zhou, China.

She walked away with prizes worth $2,500 (about sh4.5m). Other winners included Miss Peru, Silvia Cornejo who scooped the overall Miss Tourism International crown; Miss China, Tong He who was crowned Miss Charity and Miss India, Devyani Mandagvanee who scooped the Miss Disco of the World crown.

The Miss Tourism International is the world’s most-sought after fashion event, attracting a record-breaking number of contestants and fans from all over the world for four years in a row. It is held in China every year from March 20 to April 10.

Byanjeru made Uganda’s debut appearance at the event and her victory attracted much applause from all corners of the world.

“The award came as a surprise because I thought Miss Russia was the friendliest person I had ever met,” says Byanjeru.

She was sponsored into the pageant by Jessica Kyeyune, a former Miss Uganda and now Uganda Development Bank’s corporate administration manager.

The three-week long event took contestants on a tour of China’s best spots and cities. At each of the places, the girls held a fashion show, vying for any of the 13 crowns.

At the historical city of Kaifeng, the contestants planted trees in addition to showcasing cocktail clothes made by designers from their countries.

In Jiaozou the girls modelled bikinis at a show that attracted over 20,000 guests. At the end of the day, Miss Canada, Sahar Biniaz was crowned Miss Swimsuit.

The contestants also went to the Red Stone Gorge & Xiaozhai Valley, an amazing place where high mountains, beautiful rivers, lakes and caves took their breath away.

In LouYang, the girls had to show off their best dance strokes. Miss India, Devyani Mandagvaneev, emerged the winner after the event, which included performances by pop music and dance stars from Denmark, Taiwan, India and Russia. There were also acrobatics and theatre fights from the world-famous Shaolin Boxers.

The girls also toured the Shaolin Temple in Song Shang. However, the shows at Zheng Zhou attracted a mammoth crowd of fashion enthusiasts from all over the world. The girls first engaged in a tight contest for the best evening gown and then for the best souvenir that would be auctioned for charity.

Byanjeru showed off a bead and metal art piece of the Uganda map. But though she lost the crown to Miss China, she later beat all the rest for the Miss Friendship crown later on that evening.

She had also earlier on showed off a modern gomesi made of kikoyi in the national dress competition. Byanjeru was a contestant in the Miss Uganda 2007. Her father is a businessman in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb.

She is a third-year student of Bachelor of Commerce at Ndejje University, Mengo campus.
