EDITOR—The bible is a very good reference in law, but has long been misused and now is the time to liberate it from abuse. When local government minister Kahinda Otafiire pronounced himself against swearing using the bible I could not help supporting him though with a fairly different and stronger perspective.

The people who brought the bible to Africa are among a class of people referred to as “gentiles” in that very book. They had already misused the bible by mixing it up in their legal and administrative structures leading to its abuse in many ways.

In Ugandan courts and at public swearing functions, courtesy of English law, the Bible and the Koran are always handy as official tools for swearing. This constitutes a gross abuse.

I wonder why our traditional bishops and people who claim to get ‘state’ visions have never dreamt of liberating the Bible from captivity. The Israelites had to liberate the covenant from captivity and repatriated it to Jerusalem. this is the time for us Christians to liberate the Bible.

I request Kahinda Otafiire to help us formulate and forward a motion in parliament to liberate the Holy Bible. The Bible in the old testament consists of various instances of swearing; like in Genesis chapter 24, Abraham made his chief servant to swear that he would go and get a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s own clan; but in the new testament the Lord outlawed swearing.

In Matthew 5: 33- 36, the Lord said swearing is useless but your ‘yes’ should be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ should be ‘no’. He even went ahead to say that you should not swear by anything at all.

So why swear by the Bible when swearing is discouraged? In courts, I have seen people hastily swearing using the bible only to give false evidence!
