IT was a moment of grief as well as pride for the family and friends of the late Francis Xavier Muwonge as they gathered recently to celebrate his life.

Lubaga Cathedral was full of a confusing gamut of emotions when the black casket bearing the body was rolled to the front of the aisle.

President Yoweri Museveni said death had robbed Uganda of a prominent educationalist; committed father, great entrepreneur and proprietor of schools.

With a long experience in teaching, Muwonge started building secondary schools. He was the proprietor of six schools: Kampala Secondary School, Jinja Modern S.S, Mbirizi Modern S.S, Green Hill S.S in Masaka, Kampala Modern S.S and St. Francis S.S in Buloba, on Mityana road, which is still under construction.

As an educationalist, he served as director of five prominent schools. He began his career in 1969 as a teacher at Old Kampala SS, until 1971. In 1972 he joined Aga Khan SS, where he taught for a year. From 1973 to 2004, he headed his own Kampala SS. He also served as director of many prominent secondary schools.

Muwonge was born to Lovinsa Namagembe and Paul Lule Kazooba (RIP) in 1946. He is survived by seven children and a widow, Sarah Nkonge Muwonge, a private secretary in the president’s office.

Muwonge was also manager Nsambya FC, Kansanga FC and Arsenal Fans Club.
