Sex is painful

Jul 06, 2008

DRYNESS of the vagina is common. Women have different levels of lubrication during sex. Some have a lot, others moderate and a few have little. For those with little lubrication, sex can be painful.

Dear Dr,
I am 28 years old and married with a baby. I have a problem of dryness during sex. My husband engages me in foreplay, but my body never responds. We both feel pain during and after sex. What can I do?

Dear Joy,
DRYNESS of the vagina is common. Women have different levels of lubrication during sex. Some have a lot, others moderate and a few have little. For those with little lubrication, sex can be painful.

It is common and after menopause. It may be due to infection or irritation by douches, perfumes, lotions and soaps.
l If the problem is of recent onset, look for a cause.

Infection needs treatment. Irritants need to be removed
Prolonged stimulation before sex (foreplay) may help
If you are on the pill, use one with higher oestrogen

Your doctor may advise vaginal pills or cream with a mild steroid
Greens and a plant-rich diet may help such as a diet rich in soya

You can use a water-based or silicone lubricant during sex. Lubricants are available at pharmacies.

This problem can be solved with the help of your doctor.
