URA takes CECAFA tourney by storm

URA launched their bid for the CECAFA Club championship campaign with a 4-1 humiliation of Rwanda's Rayon Sport in Morogoro, Tanzania yesterday.

URA launched their bid for the CECAFA Club championship campaign with a 4-1 humiliation of Rwanda's Rayon Sport in Morogoro, Tanzania yesterday.

In the other game, defending champions APR of Rwanda were held to a 2-2 draw by Tanzanian side Yanga at Dar es Salaam national stadium.

Johnson Bagole opened the scoring in the 31th minute strike as the Ugandan champions tore Rayon apart in the group B encounter.

Bagoole and Robert Okello stretched the lead in the 48th and 69th before
substitute Eric Obua also went on target in the 84th minute after a Dan Wagaluka cross.

The win put the URA on top of group B that includes Denden of Eritrea and SID of the unfancied Djibouti.

Coach Moses Basena's side out-paced Rayon Sport most of the time till the introduction Rwandan international Jimmy Gatete in the 60th.

Gatete later pulled one back for Rwanda in the 90th minute.

URA line-up: Abbey Dhaira, Johnson Bagoole, David Kyobe, Joseph Owino, Musa Doka, Manko Kaweesa, Dan Wagaluka, Tonny Mawejje, Ismail Kigozi, Robert Okello (Eric Obua) and Martin Muwanga (Henry Kisekka).

The match handled by Ugandan referee, Denis Batte saw ex-villa star Oscar Kadenge score and set up two goals for Tusker.

At the same time, champions Tusker FC stunned favourites, Simba SC with a
3-2 in a thrilling match played at the national stadium in Dar Es Salaam.

Meanwhile, the tournament sponsor who is also Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, has appealed to CECAFA to use the power of sports to promote peace in the region.

In a message read on his behalf by his minister for Sports and Culture, President Kagame, told the delegates that is a powerful tool and should be utilised fully to promote peace and harmony.

The annual competition is due to end next week.
