A SUSPECTED thief was burnt to death in Lugazi town, Mukono district after he tried to steal a motorcycle from a bodaboda cyclist. Alex Sendawula, a resident of Kyabazaala village, was murdered on Thursday.

He was accused of conniving with thieves from Kampala, who have been stealing cars and motorcycles from Lugazi.

The Police arrested three people suspected to have been Sendawula’s accomplices in the aborted theft.

The district crime chief, Andrew Mugalula, identified them as Meddie Sekanyo, Bazira Kiyingi and Peace Nankunda.

According to a witness, Nankunda was dropped by a Toyota Premio car and hired a boda boda cyclist only identified as Tenywa from the town to take her to an unspecified area.

But Tenywa became suspicious and alerted his colleagues to accompany him. After moving for a few metres, they met the car, which had dropped Nankunda.

The occupants, including Sendawula, started making calls as soon as they saw Tenywa and Nankunda. The cyclists then attacked them.

The Police intervened by firing in the air to disperse the mob and arrested Nankunda and her colleagues. But as they were being taken for detention, residents grabbed Sendawula, lynched him and set his body ablaze.

Mugalula noted that car and motorcycle theft were on the increase in the area.

He cited an incident where Robert Dhikusooka, a special hire driver, who was killed in Mpigi and his Toyota Premio car robbed.
