THE Government is to spend billions of shillings to rehabilitate St. Joseph’s College Layibi and Sacred Heart SS in Gulu district to make them centres of excellence in northern Uganda.

Dr. John Mbabazi, the director of education, said the ministry would soon disburse sh300m to start the rehabilitation of Layibi dormitories, which he said were in appalling state and not suitable for student accommodation.

“The dormitories, latrines, dining hall, kitchen and classrooms are too dilapidated for this to be called a government school,” he explained.

“A big and historical school like this one should not look like this.” Mbabazi made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with parents and district officials at Layibi College.

The meeting had been called to discuss the reopening of the school after it was closed for a month following a violent student strike on June 18.

The students burnt property including a pick-up truck, a motorcycle and smashed windscreens of two saloon cars, one belonging to a teacher. They also vandalized a teacher’s house.

The protestors claimed that they had contributed money for a school bus for about three years but it was yet to be bought.

The meeting heard that 12 students were suspended indefinitely.

The school, with a population of 1,200 was reopened yesterday.

Each student was ordered to pay a sh40,000 fine for the destruction.

Mbabazi warned students against staging strikes that result into destruction of property but engage the administrators in dialogue to solve their grievances.

Such strikes, he added, led to loss of lots of money in rehabilitation.
