In their own words...

For over twenty years northern Uganda has suffered insurgency caused by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA. Kony wanted to set up a theocracy based on the 10 commandments and Acholi tradition. To sustain the war, the LRA has terrorized and abducted over 30,000 people and over 1.8 million have been displaced. Below students suggest how to handle this conflict.

- The government should convince the regions to reveal the rebels’ identities. This will enable the government round them up, thus bringing an end to the war.

- The government can involve the United Nations. Take the example of Jonas Savimbi; a rebel who was captured within a short time after the UN intervention.

- The government should introduce peace initiatives where they try to reconcile the offended and offenders.

- The government should increase the employment opportunities in the region to prevent people who want to become rebels because of poverty not to do so.

- The government should reconstruct northern Uganda. The Ministry of Finance and other government agencies should build roads, schools, hospitals and rehabilitate existing infrastructure.

- During war, the media feeds the people that often times increases the war rather than end it. The media should be regulated in the information they give the public. The state should also counter ‘’poisonous information’’ from the public for peace.

- Use of diplomacy: Here both Kony and Museveni have to meet face to face and compromise for peace in the north. This is because mediators have failed.

- The International Criminal Court should arrest and prosecute Kony and his rebels within the shortest time possible. This will demobilise the LRA.
