WITH the curtain drawing on the outdoor track and field season local athletes turn their focus to the third edition of the National Road Running championships in Sironko .
The MTN-sponsored event is due on Sunday. It gives the athletes the last chance to represent the country in an international event this year.
The top performers from Sironko will feature in the annual World half marathon due in Rio De Janeiro, October 28. The event closes the road calendar and gives way to the cross country season.
With defending champion Isaac Kiprop training hard, while Martin Toroitich and Wilson Busienei failed to make the Beijing Olympics, the competition is expected to be high in the eastern Uganda town which has given birth to top road runners including Catherine Webombesa and Paul Wakou.
Kiprop will be fighting to retain his title while Toroitich and Busienei will want to make up for the Olympics miss.
Half marathon national record holder Nicholas Kiprono (1:00:57) will also take part.
