KCC FC striker Brian Omony is the surprise winner of the 2007 Nile Special FUFA Footballer of the Year award.

The player, who had dismissed himself from among the possible winners, stunned guests when he was announced as the winner of the top prize — a Toyota Corona car.

FUFA vice president Jowali Kyeyago handed over the award to Omony at the ceremony at the Golf Course Hotel Saturday night. Sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi was chief guest.

“I’m surprised with this. I didn't think I would beat other players for this award but I don't think it has come too soon because I worked hard during the year,” Omony said after receiving his certificate from Kyeyago.
He beat SC Villa’s Steven Bengo to the coveted prize.

The event, sponsored by Nile Breweries, was organised by Anfield Communications. Other sponsors included Lion Assurance, NSSF, Housing Finance, Century Bottling Company, NIC, CERUDEB, GTV and Akaboozi.

Both Bakkabulindi and Kyeyago praised the awards saying that it was meant to uplift football standards in the country.
Ibrahim Sekagya, who did not attend the ceremony, was crowned Most Valuable Player as well as Professional Player of the Year.
