THE 47th timber auction fetched sh43.5m amidst complaints over high prices. A total of 255 lots of assorted species of timber in various sizes containing 7,107 pieces were sold.

“It is unbelievable that auctioned timber is competing with that sold on the open market yet its quality is not assured,” a bidder said.

Paul Lunakwita, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) timber yard supervisor, said the auctioned timber was impounded in various areas while in transit because it was illegally harvested and the owners had not paid taxes.

Lunakwita said: “We are impounding less timber than before. This has been as a result of dealers’ compliance with regulations.”
