Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has cautioned the NRM leaders not to take the public discussions (ebiganiro) recently introduced in Bushenyi district lightly.

The local government minister said the debates, initiated by former East African Community secretary general Amanya Mushega, are meant to overthrow the NRM.

“Do not think the ebiganiro are after something else,” Otafiire said.

He urged the Movement members to counteract Mushega’s arguments.

During the debates, Mushega talks about corruption in government, the removal of presidential term limits and the “refusal by President Yoweri Museveni to hand over power”.

Otafiire is the district NRM chairman.

He was on Sunday addressing NRM leaders from the 27 sub-counties of Bushenyi at Katungu Mothers Union Centre.

The meeting was organised by business tycoon Hassan Bassajjabalaba to “iron out conflicts among the party members”.

“When your house catches fire and you do not put it off immediately, it will spread over,” he said.

“Although there is no family that cannot have misunderstandings, we want our family to live in harmony.”

MPs Richard Nduhura, Tarsis Kabwegyere, Mary Karooro Okurut, Elioda Tumwesigye and Deus Bikwasizehi attended.

Bassajjabalaba said the meeting was meant “to find out why security minister Amama Mbabazi is involved in the Bushenyi politics.”

“We do not want outsiders to bring confusion into our district. That is why I called you here,” he said.

He said Mbabazi recently held a secret meeting with the former Bushenyi district vice-chairman, Benon Karyaija, in Kampala.

Karyaija was recently sacked by the district LC5 chairman, Longino Ndyanabo.

He said his sacking was influenced by Otafiire.

He has been advocating for the splitting up of Bushenyi to form a new district.

Otafiire, however, is opposed to the idea.
