Dual citizenship is a sensitive matter

Editor— Recently, I read an article about the debate in parliament about whether foreigners who acquire Ugandan citizenship should be allowed to hold some sensitive offices.

I would think such foreigners should not be allowed to hold such offices though the Ugandan constitution gives all citizens equal rights. There should be some exceptions.

Take an example of a Sudanese acquiring Ugandan citizenship and employed in the External Intelligence office. Such a person might use his office to feed the Sudan government which has been aiding Kony for decades.

Not only will such information be used against Uganda’s national interests but the security of the country will also compromised. It is for such reasons that anyone who acquires American citizenship in other ways apart from birth cannot become a US president otherwise the Californian governor would have contested for the high office.

EDITOR—When or if the Government of Uganda decides to grant foreigners Ugandan citizenship, it should be done in a very careful manner. The people granted dual citizenship should be thoroughly screened if we are not to regret our folly.
