ALL grade four health centres in Mbarara district do not have mortuaries, the district director of health services has disclosed.

“There is a tendency to disregard that important ward (mortuary),” Dr. Amooti Kaguna said on Wednesday.

He was presenting a paper on the status of the health sector during a budget conference at the district council hall in Kamukuzi, Mbarara.

Grade four health centres are in Bwizibwera, Kinoni, Bugamba and Mbarara Municipality.

Kaguna also revealed that the health units do not have medical and surgical wards, while 10 grade three health centres lack maternity wards.

Kaguna decried the high number of tuberculosis cases in the district, saying over 1,000 cases are reported annually.
He said the highest number of tuberculosis cases are in Mbarara Municipality due to overcrowding.

According to the World Health Programme, the disease affects the respiratory system and is spread by coughing and sneezing.

Kaguna said primary schools lack sufficient latrine facilities, while residents in the trading centres of Rubindi, Biharwe, Bwizibwera and Nyeihanga dwell in appalling sanitary conditions.
