UGANDA Revenue Authority’s bid to win a first regional soccer title on Saturday was ironically thwarted by fellow countrymen.

Alimansi Kadogo, Shaka Okello, Vicent Kayizzi, and Ugandan-born Manfred Kizito were at the front-line ‘firing’ for Rwanda army side APR in the CECAFA final. APR were 2-1 victors.

The east and central African tournament sponsored by Rwanda President Paul Kagame, proved Uganda’s talent is much-sought in the region. Up to 16 Ugandan ‘professionals’ featured for various teams.

ATRACO, a transport company in Rwanda, tops the list of employers for the Ugandan footballers.

They have on their squad German-trained coach Sam Ssimbwa.

Ssimbwa whose team ejected Police FC during the club championship has recruited Tom Ssemogerere, Morgan Ojok, Morley Byekwaso, Muhammad Byansi, Emmanuel Balyejusa, Godfrey Kateregga, Joseph Kabagambe, Martin Muwanga, Mike Ssebalinga, Mathias Kisitu and Hakim Magumba.

He also has Rashid Kudra, a former KCC and Victor FC player who has since played for Rwanda internationally.

APR, the CECAFA club champions, have in their ranks Kadogo, Okello and Kayizzi. Kizito who played for SC Villa before, is now a Rwanda national.

The mighty St.George of Ethiopia that URA ejected in the semi-final, boasts of Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Hannington Kalyesubula and Hassan Wasswa. Assani Bajope has since signed for them as well.

Most of these players ran out of favour in Uganda and have resurrected their careers in foreign teams especially in Rwanda, that has the most passionate fans base at the moment.
