A TOTAL of sh100m is not accounted for under the Universal Primary Education programme (UPE) in Kibaale district.

A statement from Kibaale’s principal education officer, Cleophus Mugenyi, revealed that the funds were supposed to be accounted for by headteachers in the last financial year 2005/06 for UPE.

Mugenyi said 100 headteachers of government-aided primary schools will not receive their January salary due to failure to account for the funds.

He revealed that he has been directed by Kibaale’s chief administrative officer, John Katotoroma, to recover the missing funds from the head teachers’ salaries.

The headteachers have been given a period of one week to account for the funds, or else face disciplinary action.

The district education officer warned the headteachers against submitting forged accounts, which he said is a criminal act.

Some of the primary schools affected are Bubango, Bukonda, Butumba, Bwikara Parents, Kicucura, Kyeicumu, Wangeyo, and Kyakahuku.

Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire had recently warned headteachers against misappropriating UPE funds.
