School heads have been directed to insure property of institutions that maybe damaged in strikes, fires or other calamities.

This means that property damaged or lost in such cicumstances can be replaced by the insurance firms.

The order by the education ministry follows the rampant incidents in the last three years where school property has been damaged and lives lost.

“It has since been felt that taking insurance covers would be a worthwhile decision to compensate for some of these losses,” the director of education, Dr. J.G. Mbabazi, told district education officers.

The ministry advised the schools to register with the National Insurance Corporation, saying it has a convenient policy for them.

“The ministry will introduce insurance firms to you to provide an opportunity for exposure and discussion,” Mbabazi wrote.

He clarified that schools would meet the costs.
