In a bid to reduce the burden of frequent loadshedding, the Government will distribute 800,000 free energy saver bulbs. The distribution was due to start on February 20. Energy and mineral development state minister Simon D’Ujanga said in a statement: “The Government wants to distribute free energy saver bulbs to reduce the demand for electricity. Each person will be given three energy saving bulbs in exchange for the ordinary bulbs that will be destroyed.”

Osram, a German company, won the tender to supply the energy saving bulbs. He said Yellow Pages Express Ltd was contracted to distribute the bulbs to customers.

D’Ujanga added that the measure would save between 30 to 40 megawatts of electricity per home.
