EGYPT has donated $280,000 (about sh489m) for the rehabilitation of Itojo Hospital in Ruhaama county, Ntungamo district.

The Egyptian Ambassador, Reda Bebars, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mohammed Kezaala, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding effecting the aid.

The First Lady, who is also the MP for Ruhaama, Janet Museveni, and the visiting Egyptian Assistant Minister for African Affairs, M. Marzouk, witnessed the ceremony at State House, Nakasero.
According to a State House statement, the money will be channelled through the Egyptian Fund for Technical Cooperation with Africa.

The funds will be used to repair and re-equip the maternity ward and the theatre.

Three staff houses to accommodate Egyptian specialists will be constructed.
The doctors (a surgeon, paediatrician and a gynaecologist) will support the delivery of health services at the hospital.
Janet believes that the support has taken the relationship between Egypt and Uganda a step further.

She thanked Bebars for his effort to improve health services in Uganda.
Janet appealed to the Ministry of Health and Ntungamo district leadership to effectively monitor the rehabilitation of the hospital.

International affairs state minister Okello Oryem commended Egypt for the donation.

Marzouk explained that the support is a symbol of the good relationship between the two countries. Kezaala thanked Janet for supplementing his ministry’s efforts to extend excellent health services to the population through lobbying for support from different stakeholders.
