POLICE in Jinja arrested a military policeman and three other men for attempting to rob one of the managers of the Nile Ply factor on Monday.

They are Private Mohammed Bukenya, Abdu Jeti, David Waibi and Mohammed Mulibo. An SMG rifle no. 84MA3389 loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, was recovered from them.

According to the district Police chief, Chris Barugahare, they arrested the men after a tip off. They were said to be planning to rob an Indian who was due to pay workers salaries of Nile Ply located at Kagoma Pine Plantations along the Jinja-Kamuli highway.

“Some residents saw Mulibo, Jeti and Bukenya coming out of a taxi but Bukenya disappeared into the pine trees. After some time, they saw the two men still waiting without the soldier and became suspicious. They then searched the pine plantation,” Barugahare said.

He said the suspects were believed to be waiting for the vehicle of the Indian, who had sh10m.

Barugahare explained that the residents later found the head of an exotic angora goat and its intestines, suspected to have been stolen by Mulibo and Jeti.

The men were beaten by a mob. Bukenya escaped but his gun got stuck in the swamps. Residents alerted the Police, who rescued the two men from the angry mob.
Bukenya was later captured by military policemen using two sniffer dogs.

Barugahare said the four will be charged with attempted robbery.
We suspect that Mulibo and Jeti could be part of the racket of thieves that have been stealing and eating goats because three exotic goats have been reported missing in the village the past four days,” he observed.

Barugahare urged to residents to be cautious and guard their property during the Easter season. He assured them of Police protection.
