THE ceiling plays a very important role in a house, thus making it a must have. Besides keeping the house cool, it also adds to the beauty of the home in various aspects. That is why careful thought should be put at it, especially when choosing whether it should be concrete, wooden or otherwise and its height from the floor.

“When the ceiling is too low or too high, the house will appear awkward,” comments Lutaaya Ssettaala, an architect. However, he says, if you find your ceiling too high or too low and the situation is irredeemable, you can make it appear lower by applying the following simple steps.

-Paint the ceiling a darker colour than the walls. This generally works even if the colour difference between the two should be fairly minimal. Darker colours tend to move towards you, thus making the ceiling appear lower.

-Try adding a chair rail at the waist level or around the perimeter of the room and paint both the rail and the wall below it a darker shade than the wall above.

-You can add a picture rail about 18 inches below the ceiling and paint the rail a darker shade to lead the eye down.

-In the case of a low ceiling, you can paint it a shade that is lighter than the walls to raise the roof.

-You can also use a dark floor covering or carpet in order to reduce the oppressive feeling caused by a low ceiling.

-In addition wall pictures with strong vertical lines like vertical landscapes and trees help to visually increase the height of the room.
