NEWS of “Bad Boy” Bobi Wine’s, a.k.a. Robert Kyagulanyi’s introduction to fiancée Barbara Itungo a.k.a. Barbie was greeted with wide spread skepticism. Many branded it a Kiwaani (hoax).

Bobi Wine only helped to prove the doubters right. By 2:00am, Saturday morning, the groom-in-making was still holed at Kyaddondo Rugby Grounds after performing at Peter Miles’ dance hall fest. There was no way Bobi Wine would make the journey.

But three hours later, at exactly 5:00am, May 12; Bobi, accompanied by a 150-strong crowd traveling in a convoy of 20 vehicles, set off from the Kamwokya FireBase “Ghetto” to Rubare village in Ntungamo District 260km away for kuhingira by Barbara’s parents, Gershom and Joy Kagaaju.

Yet considering that Barbie’s parents had earlier shown open disinterest in the ways of their daughter’s singing hubby, the gruelling journey wasn’t the worst Bobi Wine’s entourage was to expect, or so they thought. They anticipated an open reproach.

What did Bobi Wine have in his defensive armour? Your guess is as good as ours, but we can only wonder how Barbie’s parents lit up during the entire kuhingira, whic attracted almost everyone in the village.

Even as Ntungamo LC5 John Wycliff Karazarwe reminded the couple that love is based on honesty, Bobi audibly replied “Na Lo”, (one of his catch phrases) we knew the ice had been broken.

It was a blend of the Kiganda and Kinyankole culture as the bride changed from an omushanana to a busuuti before a grinning Bobi struggling to appear coy.

Artiste Chagga miserably failed the Kinyankole version of Okwevuga (Kinyankole traditional poems) surrendering the floor to Amarula Family’s Eddie Kigere. Rather than Kwevuga, Kigere took on praising Bobi Wine in an improvised luganda rap session. He too implored the Ntugamo crowd to reply “Na lo”, which they did.

To prove they were from Fire Base, invited guests asked that they throw a performance. Buchaman got up chanting his Lwaki Temmumatira to which the local belles replied: “Nitwija kukumatira ku oraatutwaare Kampara” (We shall love you if you take us with you to Kampala). Chagga and Nubian Li also performed.

Bobi Wine, forgetting he was the man on focus, almost stood up when Nubian Li sang Ghetto. A timely intervention from Eddie Kigere saved him the blushes.

Bobi Wine paid dowry in cash form of an equvalent of 18 Friesian cows, valued at sh0.5m each and an assortment of gifts. In return, Barbie’s parents promised the couple 30 cows when the couple weds before the dawn of next year.
