THE Executive Editor of The Monitor newspaper, Dr. Peter Mwesige, has resigned.

He has been replaced by the current managing Editor, Joachim Buwembo.
Mwesige, who had served for barely one year, returns to Makerere University where he is going to head the Department of Mass Communication in the faculty of Arts.

He took over as Monitor Executive Editor in April last year when he replaced John Baptist Wasswa.

In a communication to staff yesterday, the Monitor Group Managing Director, Conrad Nkutu, said the Board of Directors had accepted Mwesige’s resignation, which he gave notice of a week ago.

“As most of you know, Peter has been lecturing at Makerere in the department of Mass communication. The university has assigned him extra responsibilities, which has made it difficult for him to continue functioning effectively as the executive Editor,” Nkutu said.

He said Mwesige had been a role model, mentor and trainer for young journalists.
“We are sorry to lose him but wish him well in his new assignment and career,” Nkutu added.

He said during Mwesige’s tenure, the paper’s circulation had grown from 22,000 to 32,000 copies.

Buwembo, 46, has been second-in-command in the editorial department.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a diploma in Education from Makerere University.
