The Electoral Commission (EC) has finally gazetted the presidential polls results in The Uganda Gazette of March 17, 2006 Volume XCVIXNo.16.

The gazetted results published in accordance with section 57(3) of the Presidential Elections Act. No. 16 of 2005 declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner in the five-people race.

Museveni won with 4,109,449 votes which is 59.26%, retired Col. Kizza Besigye followed with 2,592,954 (7.39%), while John Ssebaana Kizito got 109,583 votes (1.58%).

Independent candidate Abed Bwanika got 65,874 votes (0.95%) and the UPC’s Miria Kalule Obote trailed with 57,071 (0.82%).

The gazette issued in Kampala on March 14 was signed by the EC chairman Badru Kiggundu.

It read, “Now, therefore, the candidate Yoweri Museveni Kaguta having obtained the highest number of votes in the election and the votes cast in his favour being more than 50% of the valid votes cast at the election, the Electoral Commission declares Yoweri Museveni Kaguta elected President of the Republic of Uganda at the Presidential Election held on 23rd February, 2006.”

The gazette also shows the first results the EC declared on February 25, 2006 which excluded 201 polling stations who results had not been received then.

The EC maintained that the absence of the results from the 201 polling stations did not substantially affect the results of the elections.

Results of the parliamentary and local council elections will be gazetted at a later date.
