The flat Rwenanura playgrounds in Rweikiniro, Ntungamo district, surrounded by green hills was a perfect setting. It was a sunny day.
The Nyekundire, pro-NRM party volunteer group in southwestern Uganda has since joined my list of event managers.
The volunteers were assisted by State House protocol and the MC Mwesigwa Rukutuna MP Ntungamo. Speculators say his job in the new cabinet was sealed that day.
Guests calmly seated in a huge marquee and nicely decorated white gazebos could have been mistaken for a crowd that had rehearsed for the event.
President Yoweri Museveni, his wife, children: Maj. Muhoozi, Natasha, Patience and their cousin Dr. Joseph Okia, sat in a separate gazebo. Other occupants were NRM Vice-chairman Moses Kigongo, his wife Olive, and the Museveni in-laws: Edwin Karugire, Odrek Rwaboogo and Geoffrey Kamuntu.
Mrs. Museveni passionately commended her family for their support during her campaigns. She said Kamuntu was part of President Museveni’s campaign team in Busoga.
Museveni addressed his wife as “Owekitinisa (Honourable) Janet Museveni Kataha.â€
The sermon aside, the speeches too had one key word ‘God’.
Janet said, “People of Ruhama, you showed me unfailing love. But I believe it was also God, whose work I had accepted. I thank my husband for shepherding the family. In the same way the biblical Moses presided over a battle and kept his arms raised, my children raised my arms during the vote so that I do not get tired and we lose.â€
Museveni said, “I did not want her to stand. I took the case before the party and told them that I was in a dilemma. When I met with elders, I could not stand in God’s way. They say I have stuck on the presidential chair like glue. But for Janet, God had revealed himself to her.â€
Prayers were conducted by bishops Edward Muhima of north Kigezi, auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara archdiocese Lambert Bainomugisha Elisha Kyamugambi of Ankore Diocese and Mbarara district Khadi Abdunul Kaduyu.
After the speeches, it was time to feast.
Locals reported that the party lasted until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Over 100 cows, 60 goats and several fowls were slaughtered.
