THE Davis Cup Euro/ Africa Group Four contest, starting today, provides another chance for Uganda to earn promotion to group three for the first time. Uganda has been stuck in Group IV, the lowest in the competition, since her debut in 1997.

The team at this year’s event running until Sunday in Malta comprises Godfrey Uzunga, Patrick Ochan, Patrick Olobo and Daniel Ruyange, who is making his maiden appearance.

Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) secretary Cedric Babu is the non-playing captain.

Eight other teams from Azerbaijan, Benin, Iceland, Malta, Madagascar, Mauritius, San Marino and Senegal are in the group.

The teams will be divided into two pools and the top two in each pool, after a round robin format, will be promoted to group three for the 2007 action.

Tennis playing nations around the world are drawn in various categories starting with group four. The top teams in each group move up the ladder while the bottom ones are relegated.

The Davis Cup was founded by an American Dwight Davis in 1900 as a challenge match between the US and the British Isles in Boston.
