A 50MW thermal plant will be constructed and installed at Kiira Power Station in Jinja, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company’s (UETCL) managing director Eriasi Kiyemba has said.
Initial power is expected by September. The plant will supplement the country’s dwindling 135MW.
Aggreko International, which operates the Lugogo thermal plant, will Build, Operate and Own (BOO) the plant for three years.
Kiyemba said in an interview that installing the 50MW plant was cheaper than importing power from Nairobi, Kenya.
“It is cheaper to construct and operate a 50MW thermal generator in Jinja than importing power from Nairobi or Eldoret (Kenya). Transmission losses through long lines are high and we end up getting little power from the 50MW we wanted to import,” he said.
“We have signed an agreement with Aggreko to install and construct a 50MW thermal plant at Kiira. This is part of emergency generation to reduce the deficit between power supply and generation,” Kiyemba said.
